The Parish of Rumney is situated in the Deanery of Bassaleg in the Newport Archdeaconry of the Diocese of Monmouth. The Bishop of Monmouth is the Right Reverend Richard Pain, who is based in Newport, as is our Archdeacon the Venerable Jonathan Williams. The Cathedral Church of the Diocese is Newport Cathedral, which is dedicated to St Woolos, who is believed to have founded the cathedral in the sixth century. The ‘Cathedral’ takes its name from the cathedra or seat of the Bishop. The Dean of Newport Cathedral is the Very Reverend Lister Tonge.
Fr John, our Parish Priest is also the Area Dean of Bassaleg, supporting the clergy and parishes of our Deanery. The Parish of Rumney is in discussion with the neighbouring parishes of St Mellons, Llanrumney, Marshfield and St Brides with a view to creating the Wentloog Ministry Area, to better share resources for ministry across a wider area, with Fr John serving as our Ministry Area Leader.
Fr John is helped in the administration of the parish by the two Churchwardens and the Parochial Church Council (PCC).The Vicar’s Warden is Mrs Margaret Birchall and the People’s Warden is Mr Perry Turner, who along with the Church Treasurer, Mrs Angela Davies and the PCC Secretary, Mrs Lesley Read form the Standing Committee chaired by Fr John. The Parochial Church Council is made up of elected members of our congregation and work with Fr John and Fr Ross to promote the mission and ministry of the parish and meet six times a year.
